In my short, nearly three decades of living, I have never witnessed a time of such drastic change as the times we are currently in. I have heard more seasoned saints than myself make similar statements as well. Day after day things continue to develop and change because of COVID-19. Travel bans, athletic events cancelled, schools closed, stay at home orders, stock market dropping, businesses closing, companies laying off workers and cutting salaries, grocery stores placing purchase limits on items, and churches moving services online. Unfortunately, I would imagine this list will continue to be added to in the coming days and weeks. The fact that our world is constantly changing may be more evident now than ever before, for our generation.

The world is constantly changing, but our God is unchanging.

God’s essence is unchangeable. God is immortal (Rom. 1:23), everlasting (Ps. 93:2), and the eternal King (Jer. 10:10). God has always existed and will exist forever. God always has been and always will be the Sovereign King of the universe.

God is holy (Isa. 6:1-4). His character never changes (Jas. 1:17). “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). A.W. Pink said “He cannot change for the better, for He is already perfect; and being perfect, He cannot change for the worse.”

The great hymn Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise says:

“We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,

And wither and perish -- but naught changeth Thee.”

Not only does God not change, but His truth does not change.

“Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” – Ps. 119:89

“But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.” – Ps. 119:151-152

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” -Isa. 40:8

Three Encouragements:

1. Remember, God always has been and always will be the Sovereign Lord of the universe. No being or thing will ever de-throne our almighty and eternal God! Brothers and sisters, rest in this truth!

2. Fill your mind with God’s unchanging truth found in His Word. It is through the Bible we come to know our unchanging God and His unchanging truth. As fallible human beings, we need reminders of God’s Word all throughout the day. Spend more time filling your mind with God’s Word than filling your mind with worldly things.

3. Share God’s unchanging truth with one another. Ask how others are doing and listen as they share their heart. Share your heart with others. Graciously speak God’s Word into one another’s lives to build each other up.

Take heart, brothers and sisters, the world is constantly changing, but our God is unchanging.
